Cover design tips for KDP
KDP Launch Kit
Your cover is the first thing readers see. On Amazon, it usually appears as a small thumbnail. A cover that looks clear, professional, and genre-appropriate at that size can boost clicks and sales. Here are practical cover design tips for KDP.
Design for thumbnail size
Most browsing happens on phones. Your cover will often be an inch or two wide. So: keep the design simple. One strong image or concept. Title and author name large and legible. Avoid tiny text, busy patterns, or too many elements. Zoom out and check how it looks small—that’s the real test.
Match genre expectations
Readers recognize genres by cover style. Romance often uses couples, warm colors, and clear typography. Thrillers use tension, contrast, and bold type. Cozy mysteries might use illustrated or lighter visuals. Look at bestsellers in your category and note common patterns. Your cover should say “this is a [genre] book” at a glance.
Use high-resolution files
KDP has minimum resolution requirements (e.g. 2560 px on the longest side for the recommended size). Use high-res images and export at full resolution. Blurry or pixelated covers look unprofessional and can be rejected. Start big; scaling down is fine, scaling up is not.
Typography matters
Title and author name need to be readable at thumbnail size. Choose a font that fits the genre and isn’t overly decorative. Contrast is key: light text on a light background (or dark on dark) disappears. Use color, outline, or shadow so the text pops. Fewer words often work better—short titles read clearly.
Get feedback before publishing
Show your cover to readers or writers in your genre. Ask: “What genre does this suggest? Would you click on it?” If the answers don’t match your book, revise. A few rounds of feedback can save you from a cover that underperforms.
Consider professional help
If design isn’t your strength, hire a cover designer or use a quality premade cover. Reedsy, 99designs, and genre-specific designers offer options. Good premades are often affordable and genre-tested. A strong cover is an investment that can pay off in visibility and sales.
Check KDP specs
Before you upload, confirm trim size, bleed, and spine (for print). KDP provides templates. Wrong dimensions can cause rejection or a bad print result. Double-check that your file meets the current KDP cover requirements.
A KDP cover doesn’t need to be fancy—it needs to be clear, on-genre, and legible at small sizes. Prioritize that, and your book will have a better chance to stand out in the store.
