Amazon Ads for indie authors: getting started

Amazon Ads let you show your book to shoppers when they search or browse on Amazon. For indie authors, they’re one of the few ways to get visibility without a big traditional marketing budget. Here’s a practical overview for getting started.

Why consider Amazon Ads

Organic discovery on Amazon is competitive. Ads put your book in front of readers who are already looking for books—in search results and on product pages. If your cover, blurb, and reviews are solid, ads can turn that visibility into sales. They’re not free, so you need a clear goal: launch visibility, steady sales, or pushing a specific title or series.

Campaign types that matter for books

Sponsored Products are the main option for most authors. Your ad appears in search results and on product detail pages. You choose keywords (or use automatic targeting) and set a cost per click (CPC). You pay when someone clicks, not when they buy. Start with Sponsored Products; they’re the most straightforward and scalable.

Sponsored Brands use your brand name and a custom headline and are better once you have multiple books or a recognizable author name. New authors often focus on Sponsored Products first.

Set a budget you can afford

Amazon lets you set a daily budget per campaign. Start small: $5–$10 per day is enough to test. You can increase once you see which keywords or targets work. Treat the first weeks as learning: you’re gathering data on what gets clicks and what converts to sales, not necessarily turning a profit yet.

Keywords vs. automatic targeting

With keyword targeting, you choose the search terms (e.g. “cozy mystery series,” “romance second chance”). With automatic targeting, Amazon places your ad based on its own interpretation of your book. Many authors start with automatic to see what Amazon suggests, then create keyword campaigns based on the search terms report. Use phrases that match your genre and blurb.

What to expect

Not every click becomes a sale. You’ll have a cost per click (CPC) and, over time, a cost per sale. If your royalty per book is $3 and your cost per sale is $2, you’re ahead. If cost per sale is $5, you’re losing money on that campaign. Optimize by pausing bad keywords, raising bids on winners, and improving your cover and blurb so conversion improves. Give campaigns at least a few weeks before judging.

Improve the listing first

Ads send traffic to your product page. If the page is weak—blurry cover, vague blurb, no reviews—conversion will be low and ad spend will feel wasted. Before spending much, make sure your cover, title, description, and categories are in good shape. Ads amplify; they don’t fix a bad listing.

Amazon Ads can be a useful tool for indie authors who are ready to invest in paid reach. Start with a small Sponsored Products campaign, learn from the data, and scale what works while you keep improving your book’s presentation.
