Building your author email list before launch

An email list is one of the few marketing channels you fully own. When you have a list, you can tell readers about your launch, new books, and promotions without depending on social algorithms. Building that list before your book comes out gives you an audience ready to buy and review on day one. Here’s how to start.

Why start before launch

If you wait until the book is live, you’re telling people about a book they can’t buy yet—and many will forget. If you collect emails in the months (or even weeks) before release, you can send a single “It’s live” email on launch day. Those subscribers are already interested; they’re more likely to buy early and leave reviews when it matters most.

Offer something valuable

People give their email when they get something in return. For fiction, that might be a free short story, a prequel, or the first few chapters. For nonfiction, a checklist, a PDF guide, or an excerpt. The lead magnet should match your book’s genre and tone so you attract the right readers. Put the signup form on your website, in your social bio, and in author back matter.

Use a simple signup tool

You don’t need a complex setup. Use a provider like MailerLite, ConvertKit, or Mailchimp. Create a signup form, connect it to a welcome email (and optionally deliver your freebie), and add the form link or embed to your site and socials. Comply with privacy and anti-spam rules (e.g. GDPR, CAN-SPAM): clear consent and an easy unsubscribe.

Grow slowly and steadily

You don’t need thousands of subscribers to see a benefit. A few hundred engaged readers can drive meaningful launch-week sales and reviews. Post your signup link consistently: in your bio, at the end of blog posts, when you talk about your work in progress. Cross-promote with other authors in your genre (newsletter swaps, group giveaways) to reach new readers.

Segment when it makes sense

At first, one list is fine. As you publish more books or series, you can segment (e.g. by genre or series) so you only email people about books they care about. That improves open rates and reduces unsubscribes. Start simple; add segments when the list and your catalog grow.

Launch day email

When your book is live, send a clear, short email: cover, title, one or two lines about the book, and a direct link to buy. Ask readers to leave a review if they enjoy it. Don’t over-explain or send multiple emails the same day. One strong launch email is enough to start.

Building an email list before launch takes a bit of upfront work, but it pays off when you have a direct line to readers who want to hear from you. Start with a simple signup and one good lead magnet, then grow from there.
